Project team
We are an interdisciplinary crew of professionals with expertise in different areas of developing, performing and evaluating a newly formed study programme. Together we make sure that clinical research and medical education are promoted at ETH.
Jörg Goldhahn
Professor Jörg Goldhahn joined the team in January 2016 as project leader of the bachelor’s degree programme in human medicine. Aware of the complexity of the project and fully motivated to create something from the ground up, he put all his energy into the development of the new medical course from the very beginning. Jörg Goldhahn is responsible for the content of the curriculum and, together with his team, ensures that clinical application is closely involved in the study programme, something which he had missed during his own studies.
He himself teaches the courses Fundamentals of Medicine and the Human Body and Musculoskeletal System and is responsible for the translational research internship. Moreover, he also conducts clinical research in a variety of areas with a specific focus on digital biomarkers, mainly in cooperation with the Baden Cantonal Hospital (KSB).
After the successful launch of the bachelor’s programme, the modules are now being revised and refined. Further training programmes for health professionals are planned to be introduced in the future.

Antonia Magdaleno Martinez Walser
Antonia is responsible for the study administration of the medical students. She communicates information to them and is their point of contact for all questions that they might have.
Antonia prepares the practical implementation of the modules, groups the students for practical work and makes sure that everybody knows when they need to be where. She organises the grading conference, where the final decision is made whether certain students have passed or failed their exams. Afterwards she registers the grades in the system, so that students can see their exam results in protected page myStudies. If the student passed the exam, she makes sure that the ECTS points for the module are credited. In addition to this daily business, Antonia assigns Master study places to the students and distributes them between our partner universities external page USI, external page Universität Basel and external page Zürich – a decision with a heavy impact on their lives. Furthermore, she supports the students whenever they need official documents like performance assessments and certificates for ECTS achievements, and she informs students coming from abroad with special requests regarding the Bachelor Human medicine.
Antonia enjoys the position at the interface of students and department staff. As she puts it: it is challenging, but there is something new to learn every day.

Mirdita Useini - Curriculum coordination and development
Mirdita’s focus is the curriculum, the core of the Bachelor Human Medicine. She manages the entire curriculum, implements changes and makes sure that all pieces fit together harmoniously.
To accomplish all of this, she leads a dedicated group of student teaching assistants who ensure the successful technical implementation of both online and offline courses and provide support in coordinating the curriculum. In all this, Mirdita keeps the big picture in mind: She maintains a holistic perspective on the curriculum to be able to identify, which competencies and skills come off badly during the course of the study programme and finds ways to enhance the integration of these elements within the curriculum. One approach to address these challenges is her involvement in the teaching commission for Human Medicine. There she discusses and decides on changes and improvement of the study programme. Additionally, she is establishing a digital skills lab at ETH, providing students with opportunities to refine their practical abilities. Furthermore, Mirdita also coordinates parts of the longitudinal curricula, with a focus on areas such as communication skills, sonography and promoting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) competencies. Alongside Tuija Waldvogel she is also responsible for the faculty development, planning the content of various faculty development initiatives. To explore new ideas for further developing the curriculum and gain deeper knowledge in medical education science, she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in external page Medical Education at the University of Bern.
To sum up, Mirdita is the one holding the curriculum together and the link between the department staff, the lecturers, and the students. With her background in intercultural communication, she is perfectly suited to connect these different stakeholders and to make sure that everyone moves in the same direction.

Tuija Waldvogel - Curriculum mapping
Tuija has a very interdisciplinary position. She makes sure that the content of the Bachelor of Human Medicine meets the requirements for medical universities in Switzerland so that the students can pass their state examination at the end of their studies.
The requirements to pass the medical state examination are defined in the external external page PROFILES catalogue. To make sure that the PROFILES are met, we have a curriculum mapping at ETH Zurich, which is coordinated by Tuija. In detail, this means that for each lecture we define learning objectives, which the students need to achieve to pass the module. These learning objectives are then mapped to the PROFILES catalogue to make sure that our curriculum is aligned with the requirements of the PROFILES. The curriculum mapping is conducted on an online platform called external page LOOOP (Learning Opportunities, Objectives and Outcomes Platform), which was developed by Charité in Berlin, Germany. Our mapping provides the basis to analyze and improve our curriculum.
Based on the curriculum mapping Tuija is also coordinating part of our longitudinal curricula like the emergency track, pharmacology, and the inclusion of diversity and inclusion in our curriculum.
Tuija is also responsible for the faculty development together with Mirdita Useini where she plans the content of the Study Course Workshops and the Happy Hours Education. The continuous improvement and adaptation of the faculty development is the shared responsibility together with Mirdita Useini.

Dr. Claudia Schlegel - Interprofessional cooperation & Skills labs
Claudia works with the Project team part-time next to her main job at the Bildungszentrum Pflege in Bern. Her focus is interdisciplinary and interprofessional cooperation, considering that patient’s health involves many different stakeholders.
Claudia is responsible for the module “interprofessional patient path” in the Bachelor Human medicine. In this module, she raises the students’ awareness that patients are located at the interface of many different professions: In the hospital, there are not only physicians, but also nurses and other caregivers. And after leaving the hospital, they are in contact with the general practitioner, Spitex, pharmacies, health insurance workers and sometimes complementary medicine. All these stakeholders play a role in helping the patients – communication with the patient and amongst each other is key. The module is very practical, and in addition, students can present a patient case from their personal environment. The objective is to create awareness that patients with complex symptoms often undergo an odyssey with many different health professionals involved – an eye-opening experience of thinking outside the box.
In addition to this interdisciplinarity module, also the practical skills of the medical students are dear to Claudia’s heart. Therefore, she is involved in establishing skills labs at ETH, where the students can exercise their practical skills, for example with simulated patients or with digital tools like virtual reality.
